The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command has arrested 70 suspected drug dealers and seized 4,309.04 kilogrammes of Indian hemp in the first half of the year.

The agency also recovered 1.66 kilogrammes of cocaine, 165.9 grammes of heroin and convicted and sentenced to various jail terms 49 drug suspects.
The Lagos State Commander, Mr Wesley Midala who gave the information at the weekend during a joint programme with the Lagos State government at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking said among the agency's feats was the destruction of 12 plots of Indian hemp plantation at Epe and the prompt arrest of the farm owners.

Giving further insight on the progress of the agency, Midala said a female notorious dealer in Indian hemp, Esther Ogochukwu and her son, Chinedu were arrested at Iba area of Lagos in possession of 274 bags of weeds weighing 2298.86 kg.
He said that another drug baron, Mutiu Olaleye, 30, was picked at Ado-Odo, Ogun State in possession of 216.05kg of Cannabis concealed in 21 bags and one Adekunle Mutiu Mumuni, 20, was arrested with 18 bags of Indian hemp.

Midala who decried youths' use of Indian hemp called on churches, mosques, traditional institutions to preach about its harmful effects, adding that secondary schools and tertiary institutions should include lectures on drugs in their curricula.
